Guatemala City is a city of contrasts, where the historic riches of the country are interlaced with the modernity of a metropolitan capital. If you want to enjoy yourself, you are in the right place. Guatemala City has many places to have fun for children and adults alike.
Kids & Family
If your children like animals, you can take them to the Zoológico La Aurora, open Tuesday to Sunday, from 9a-5p. If they prefer more modern entertainment, there is Chuck E Cheese´s Pizza. Older kids and adolescents may prefer the Fun Plaza or Metro-Bowl. Both of these bowling centers also have video games, pool tables and cafeterias, and organize events for children.
Cinema
New movies can be seen at screens around the city. The most popular are Magic Place, Tikal Futura, Próceres at the Gran Centro Los Próceres, and Cines Prisa.
Museums
If you are interested in museums, a visit to the National Museums Center, is a must. This complex includes the Archeology and Ethnology Museum, the Museo de Arte Moderno and the Museo de Historia Natural. The Ixchel Museum of Indigenous Dress and the Museo Popol Vuh are in the last six streets of Zone 10. They offer an impressive exhibition of the history and culture of Guatemala. If you want to visit a special museum for children, there is the Museo de los Niños, is an interactive museum for children.
Nightlife
When it comes to nightlife in Guatemala City, things start to liven up in the traditional bars of the city center at about five o’clock in the evening. In the Zona Viva (Zone 10) in the south of the city, dozens of venues compete to offer the finest food and best entertainment. This area is now the city’s most popular attraction, bursting with nightclubs, discos, bars, restaurants, and shops selling jade, silver, pottery and fashion based on tribal embroidery designs. For a large venue with several bars in different styles, including old-fashioned, try Kalhua, next to the Hotel Westin Camino Real. In the Los Próceres shopping center is the Las Terrazas leisure centre, with a whole range of attractions from discos to bars. Shelock´s and Sushi Itto each have their own distinctive style.
