The gallery of Modern Art has been in this building since 1928. It is deep inside the marvellous Park di Nervi in a stately villa from the Serra family. This was built in the second half of the seventeenth century and has since been expanded with galleries and side annexes. The museum contains over four thousand works of art including paintings, sculptures, drawings and etchings. The original collection was made up of the collection of Prince Oddone of Savoy and the legacy of the Duchess of Galliera. It has grown thanks to several bequests and careful acquisitions.
Ligurian artists from the nineteenth and twentieth century are particularly well represented. There are works from T. Luxoro, G. Monteverde, F. Messina, E. Baroni, A. Martini, A. D'Andrade, E. Rayper and P. D. Cambiaso. The sensitive treatment of the Ligurian countryside in the works of Rubaldo Merello deserves particular note. There are also masterpieces by R.Guttoso, M.Mafai, F.Casorati, R.Sirotti and P.Nomellini thanks to recent donations. Unfortunately the civic collection of modern art has not been open to visitors since 1989. The exhibition spaces need total renovation.
